About Maharashtra:
The name “Maharashtra” is believed to be originated from the word “Rathi”, which
means a chariot driver.
Shivaji Raje Bhosle, the founder of the Maratha Empire, holds the highest place
in Maratha history.
Looking back into the history, records show that there was a State named Bombay. Since Marathi and
Gujarati languages dominated in this state, it was divided in two distinct regions.
The Bombay re-organization Act was introduced and two independent states were
formed, namely Maharashtra and Gujarat. The newly formed State of Maharashtra retained Bombay as
its capital city. Today Bombay is known as Mumbai.
Maharashtra became an official State on 1st May, 1960.
